Halloween at the Outpost: Build a Spooky Shelf in One Afternoon

Spooky season's ridin' into town, pioneer. You don't need a garage full of inflatables to get in the spirit. One well-staged shelf does the trick, and you can build it in an afternoon. Here's the Outpost's blueprint.

Step 1: Cast Your Characters

Every good haunt needs a crowd. The Notal'Ego Halloween Pack is made for exactly this:

• Burlap Bob: a hodgepodge of horror hiding behind a burlap sack. Put him front and center.
• Pumpkin Ted: the jack-o'-lantern-headed troublemaker every Halloween lineup needs.

Step 2: Build the Haunted House

Every crowd needs a place to haunt. The Dark Castle "Night Specter" DIY Miniature House Kit is a basswood build with built-in LED lighting (battery included), a pull-out drawer, and a clear display cover. It finishes at about 6" x 5" x 7", which is the perfect backdrop for a row of minifigures. Build it on a Saturday afternoon, flip on the lights, and you've got a glowing centerpiece.

Step 3: Add a Prop With Presence

The Treasure Cove Skeleton Hand Goblet stands nearly 8" tall with sculpted skulls and a skeletal stem, hand-painted in composite resin. It has a removable stainless steel insert, so it can pull double duty at the party and on the mantel. Set it at one end of the shelf for height.

Step 4: Stage It

• Go tall to short. Goblet on one end, castle in the middle, figures out front.
• Light from below. The castle's LEDs plus a single small lamp make long shadows.
• Protect the stars. Keep your favorite figures in a stackable Minifigure Display Case so they survive the party.
• Leave room to grow. Every good haunt picks up a few new residents by October 31.
